Greetings sorors and friends!
I am Joyce A. Sturgis, current Basileus (President) of Baltimore’s Iota Chapter Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc. On March 8th, 1947, thirteen ladies were armed with a vision that included sisterhood, achievement, scholarship and service. These women believed that in order to provide support to those who were disenfranchised; to bring awareness to and help stimulate actions that would impact the many unfair practices in public policies; and to be advocates for effective solutions to the many problems detrimental to their world community. Their impetuses lead to the founding of Iota Chapter.
In fact, these ladies captured the vision that was set forth by the twenty-five professional and business women who founded Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority in 1937. Since its beginning in 1947, Iota Chapter has always been there to provide service and the needed expertise to improve “the quality of life” right where we are. And through our outreach programs we have impacted countless communities in the United States and abroad. And we will continue these efforts, especially now since Haiti is foremost in our hearts and our prayers.
As we stand on the shoulders of those dynamic Iota women whose vision who laid the foundation, we will continue to advocate, innovate and make a difference in the communities in which we live and serve. Guided by the IDEALS of our Founders, we will be true to our National Theme, “Preserving Our Heritage – Building Our Future.”
With Sisterly Love,
Joyce A. Sturgis
Basileus
